Aarti Shah McTimoney Chiropractor celebrates 25 years in practice with a torn meniscus!!

The end of 2014 marks 25 years as a McTimoney Chiropractor for me – a milestone that I never expected to reach when I graduated in 1989 only 21 years of age.

It has been a year where I’ve taken a fair amount of time off, some for pleasure and some due to pain. The pain being a torn meniscus (a tear in my knee cartilage) which eventually forced me to get off my feet and rest. And resting I am as I write this on a beach in sunny Spain waiting for the sun to go down.

I never fully appreciated how painful a torn knee cartilage is – how could I as I had never experienced one before. I have spent nearly 5 months since May doing rehabilitation exercises on it, icing it, have McTimoney Chiropractic sessions, ultrasound, painkillers, homeopathy, healing sessions, praying and maintaining my upper body strength in case I needed crutches if I had surgery.

For the best part I have tried my best to be positive but sometimes darkness has engulfed me with anger, frustration and pain and that all encompassing question, “Why had this had happened to me?”  With all the measures and steps that I had implemented for my recovery one would think that I would have been fully healed by now – no? Sometimes the best solution is to step back and do nothing. This is what I finally realised and was forced to do at the end of Aug. With 1 weeks notice to my clients I cancelled all my work for 5 weeks and ran away to the mountains in Spain. For the first few weeks I slept more that I can ever recall as I began to fully realise how exhausting and weary pain can be. Slowly over the weeks I resurfaced ready in time for my clients arrival to mark the 25 years celebration of my being in practice and their experience of McTimoney sessions with me. I was overwhelmed and honoured that clients would come to support me.

At inside Out Retreat Spain (www.insideoutretreat.com) my clients and I participated in juicing, detoxing, mountain walks, posture awareness, aquacise. Yoga, Pilates, inspirational movies and talks, alternative treatments and McTimoney Chiropractic sessions from me as well as just hanging out together.

Over the period of 4 weeks that I spent in Spain in September I felt rejuvenated, had lost weight through sleeping ( my knee was grateful), looked younger than I had done in a long time and was truly happy to be alive and virtually pain free in my knee – I’d forgotten how good it felt to feel well. The power of rest and doing “absolutely nothing” is underrated – for me it has been highly beneficial and productive in my healing.

My time away has only confirmed the power of McTimoney Chiropractic – one does not need ongoing sessions if clients are willing to participate in their own recovery through appropriate exercise, diet and nutrition and of course adequate rest as I found out recently

McTimoney Chiropractic: Innate Self-Healing with Aarti Shah

Mctimoney Chiropractor Aarti Shah has been a McTimoney Chiropractor since 1989 and has been practising in London since 1994. She believes that the body has its own “Innate Self -Healing” ability and that McTimoney Chiropractic is a great facilitator of the healing process, thereby realigning and rebalancing the entire body on many levels.

What, when and where was your first experience of complementary therapies?

First experience of comp therapy was within days of my birth! Being Indian born it’s customary to be massaged as a baby and this was given to me by my grandmother who did both my mother and myself. As a result I’ve always loved massage.

What made you decide to treat others?

At school I was fascinated by the human skeleton and knew the names of all the bones by the time I was 12. At a young age I was keen to see how I could use this fascination. A few years later my aunt and my mother were both being treated by a McTimoney Chiropractor and it helped them so much that it led me to wanting to help others too and at the same time satisfy my curiosity of the bones,

What influenced your treatments the most?

John McTimoney’s philosophy of “Innate Intelligence” – that is the body has an inbuilt ability to heal itself with the right encouragement and tools.

Describe Holistic in less than 10 words?

Holistic – treating a human being as a WHOLE.

Who/what is the biggest inspiration on your journey?

John McTimoney – the Founder of McTimoney Chiropractic – if he hadn’t discovered the method I would not be where I am today. I feel totally indebted to him for giving such a great gift to the world.

What role do your therapies play in the way you live?

I’ve been in practice since 1989. I totally believe in alignment and balance where I incorporate it fully in my life. I exercise regularly, eat well, get adequate rest and relaxation, and get maintenance/preventative McTimoney treatments at least 6 times a year. I’m a firm believer of leading by example to my clients.

What do you hope your clients to experience when they get treated by you?

I expect my clients to be pain free or their pain to be substantially reduced within a few sessions. I expect them to have more mobility and flexibility and to experience a sense of wellbeing that is their birth right to feel but one that their body has forgotten about. With this sense of freedom and other recommended changes I expect them to lead pain free and hopefully more fulfilled lives.

What is the most rewarding thing about what you do?

It’s incredibly rewarding and humbling to see clients’ alignments change right in front of your eyes knowing that their pain is on it’s way out and that you have contributed towards it.

Do you eat ice cream, drink coffee or any guilty pleasures?

For me being human means being balanced so things in moderation and within reason are acceptable like ice cream coffee and other guilty pleasures.

Lower Back Pain

The Incredible Aarti Shah Abridged Version

Renowned author Santa Montefiore has suffered with lower back pain for years – has she found the answer in the form of McTimoney practitioner Aarti Shah?

My quest for a saviour to heal my back has been going on for three years now. Along the way I have met many physiotherapists, chiropractors, osteopaths and doctors – a few of whom have made a positive difference, but no one has had quite the effect of Aarti Shah, a McTimoney practitioner who has achieved extraordinary results while barely laying a hand on me.

For as long as I remember I’ve always had a weak lower back, prone to pain on the lacrosse fields during my school days or later, picking up my children. I have practised Pilates for the last five years and when the weather is not wet and cold, I enjoy running. About three years ago for reasons that I’m unable to explain, my lower back got so bad I couldn’t bend to brush my teeth in the morning and tying my shoe laces, getting in and out of the car, loading the dishwasher, became major challenges. My passion for skiing looked like it was in danger as doing up my boots was almost impossible, and anything other than floating down a piste made me squirm in agony.

I had a scan at the Wellington hospital, which revealed an “L”shaped spine, with a flattened, protruding disc at the curve. Although, it wasn’t really close enough to the nerve to cause major problems and I had no pain anywhere else but in my lower back. If it was really bad I’d have had pain down my legs and in my buttocks. No one seemed to know why it was so painful and only my trusty chiropractor, my physio and my Nurofen Plus gave me some relief.

Then my father recommended I try McTimoney. Now, if you haven’t heard of McTimoney you are not alone. The McTimoney form of chiropractic care was developed by a man John McTimoney over fifty years ago and is a very gentle, whole body approach, making sure that the entire skeleton is aligned and balanced. I had two sessions with a very nice lady in Hampshire, which made a marked difference. So, I looked on the internet to see if I could find a McTimoney practitioner near where I live in London. The name Aarti Shah leapt of the page and I booked in at The Life Centre on Edge Street in Kensington.

Aarti is a gentle Indian lady with a bright, Ready Brek glow and, it seems to me, the secret to eternal youth as well but so far she’s not telling yet. I lay on the bed and she began to flick and softly clap about me, and putting her hands on me so gently I could barely feel her. It all felt a little odd and to be honest I thought, “Oh, Santa, you’ve been had!” I really didn’t hold out any hope that her method was going to work. It certainly didn’t much resemble the McTimoney practitioner I went to see in Hampshire. But I’m a woman with a very open mind, so I decided not to judge on the method but the result.

When I got home I read all the testimonials on her website and it was with some relief that I saw I was not alone in thinking her methods a little on the whacky side, but encouraged that they all credited Aarti with great healing powers and unbelievable results. I expected a miracle and a couple of days later I woke with zero pain. ZERO. That was a novelty and a massive surprise. I expected the results to wear off, and they did over the next few days, but I returned to Aarti the following week and my back has been steadily and very noticeably improving. I have been to see her for four sessions and most of the time I am now unaware of my back, which is extraordinary given that I was constantly aware of it because of the discomfort.

Since seeing Aarti I have skied the most challenging off piste, in horrible snow, and even pounded my back over moghuls, without feeling any discomfort at all. I shall now add my testimonial to her website and conclude that, in my opinion, as well as a chiropractor, Aarti is a very gifted spiritual healer.
