McTimoney Chiropractic in Earthquake Nepal

It’s really hard to believe that a couple of months ago when I left Nepal and House with Heart ( HwH ) the Children’s Home that I support and volunteer in that an earthquake of 7.8 magnitude would hit the country and kill over 7000 people to date. This death toll is expected to rise.

It’s hard to believe that not that long ago I was doing McTimoney Chiropractic sessions on the kids at HwH, teaching them about posture, how to walk and how to stretch as well as run around with them, celebrate Holi, and celebrate my birthday.

It’s hard to believe that some of UNESCO’s world heritage sights in Kathmandu from the 15th to 18th centuries that I have visited have come crumbling down.

It’s hard to believe that the Nepalese government ( or maybe not that hard ) at a time like this is taxing and delaying international aid reaching those that need it the most and are keeping it for themselves, their villages and their families.

It’s even harder to believe that the Hyatt Regency has been accused of turning away local Nepali people seeking refuge in their large luxurious grounds – shame on you Hyatt for you have lost a customer for life and undoubtedly will lose more.

However despite all of this the human spirit of giving, sharing, caring, being compassionate and praying for all of those that have suffered in this prevails and shines a bright light in the darkness that has engulfed Nepal. When the earthquake hit HwH was affected like a lot of places that were not left untouched. In true style and demonstrating generosity of spirit they opened their gates and gardens to their adjoining neighbours whose buildings had either entirely collapsed or were in the danger of being collapsed. The Hyatt could really learn something here! The home that had become my home in March had substantial structural damage with cracks, the solar panels were damaged and their water tank had shards of glass and was unusable so they were relying on rainwater until it could be replaced. The children and staff could not stay in the home as too unsafe, so they amongst their neighbours have been living in 2 tents pitched in the garden. We’re talking about 75 people crammed in 2 tents sharing 2 toilets that were thankfully built in the garden a few years ago. Thankfully they were better prepared than most and had stocked up on some emergency food supplies which is what they have been nourishing on under the rains of the monsoon season which has come early creating other problems.

Tragedy gives an opportunity for human kindness to shine. I have had countless messages of support from family, friends, colleagues and clients asking what they could do. In response to this I have asked for donations and have pledged myself as I truly believe in leading by example. I am grateful for the fantastic reply to this call of help and in particular to my clients who support my passion for taking McTimoney out to the world, especially to those who who are less fortunate than ourselves and who have already experienced so many challenges than most of us will ever see in our lives. I hope to return to HwH next year when I shall be using McTimoney again amongst the residents and staff whom I’m honoured to count as my family.

As Dailai Lama says:
“Serving and helping others out of compassion is non-violence in action.”

Aarti Shah McTimoney Chiropractor celebrates 25 years in practice with a torn meniscus!!

The end of 2014 marks 25 years as a McTimoney Chiropractor for me – a milestone that I never expected to reach when I graduated in 1989 only 21 years of age.

It has been a year where I’ve taken a fair amount of time off, some for pleasure and some due to pain. The pain being a torn meniscus (a tear in my knee cartilage) which eventually forced me to get off my feet and rest. And resting I am as I write this on a beach in sunny Spain waiting for the sun to go down.

I never fully appreciated how painful a torn knee cartilage is – how could I as I had never experienced one before. I have spent nearly 5 months since May doing rehabilitation exercises on it, icing it, have McTimoney Chiropractic sessions, ultrasound, painkillers, homeopathy, healing sessions, praying and maintaining my upper body strength in case I needed crutches if I had surgery.

For the best part I have tried my best to be positive but sometimes darkness has engulfed me with anger, frustration and pain and that all encompassing question, “Why had this had happened to me?”  With all the measures and steps that I had implemented for my recovery one would think that I would have been fully healed by now – no? Sometimes the best solution is to step back and do nothing. This is what I finally realised and was forced to do at the end of Aug. With 1 weeks notice to my clients I cancelled all my work for 5 weeks and ran away to the mountains in Spain. For the first few weeks I slept more that I can ever recall as I began to fully realise how exhausting and weary pain can be. Slowly over the weeks I resurfaced ready in time for my clients arrival to mark the 25 years celebration of my being in practice and their experience of McTimoney sessions with me. I was overwhelmed and honoured that clients would come to support me.

At inside Out Retreat Spain (www.insideoutretreat.com) my clients and I participated in juicing, detoxing, mountain walks, posture awareness, aquacise. Yoga, Pilates, inspirational movies and talks, alternative treatments and McTimoney Chiropractic sessions from me as well as just hanging out together.

Over the period of 4 weeks that I spent in Spain in September I felt rejuvenated, had lost weight through sleeping ( my knee was grateful), looked younger than I had done in a long time and was truly happy to be alive and virtually pain free in my knee – I’d forgotten how good it felt to feel well. The power of rest and doing “absolutely nothing” is underrated – for me it has been highly beneficial and productive in my healing.

My time away has only confirmed the power of McTimoney Chiropractic – one does not need ongoing sessions if clients are willing to participate in their own recovery through appropriate exercise, diet and nutrition and of course adequate rest as I found out recently

McTimoney Chiropractic: Innate Self-Healing with Aarti Shah

Mctimoney Chiropractor Aarti Shah has been a McTimoney Chiropractor since 1989 and has been practising in London since 1994. She believes that the body has its own “Innate Self -Healing” ability and that McTimoney Chiropractic is a great facilitator of the healing process, thereby realigning and rebalancing the entire body on many levels.

What, when and where was your first experience of complementary therapies?

First experience of comp therapy was within days of my birth! Being Indian born it’s customary to be massaged as a baby and this was given to me by my grandmother who did both my mother and myself. As a result I’ve always loved massage.

What made you decide to treat others?

At school I was fascinated by the human skeleton and knew the names of all the bones by the time I was 12. At a young age I was keen to see how I could use this fascination. A few years later my aunt and my mother were both being treated by a McTimoney Chiropractor and it helped them so much that it led me to wanting to help others too and at the same time satisfy my curiosity of the bones,

What influenced your treatments the most?

John McTimoney’s philosophy of “Innate Intelligence” – that is the body has an inbuilt ability to heal itself with the right encouragement and tools.

Describe Holistic in less than 10 words?

Holistic – treating a human being as a WHOLE.

Who/what is the biggest inspiration on your journey?

John McTimoney – the Founder of McTimoney Chiropractic – if he hadn’t discovered the method I would not be where I am today. I feel totally indebted to him for giving such a great gift to the world.

What role do your therapies play in the way you live?

I’ve been in practice since 1989. I totally believe in alignment and balance where I incorporate it fully in my life. I exercise regularly, eat well, get adequate rest and relaxation, and get maintenance/preventative McTimoney treatments at least 6 times a year. I’m a firm believer of leading by example to my clients.

What do you hope your clients to experience when they get treated by you?

I expect my clients to be pain free or their pain to be substantially reduced within a few sessions. I expect them to have more mobility and flexibility and to experience a sense of wellbeing that is their birth right to feel but one that their body has forgotten about. With this sense of freedom and other recommended changes I expect them to lead pain free and hopefully more fulfilled lives.

What is the most rewarding thing about what you do?

It’s incredibly rewarding and humbling to see clients’ alignments change right in front of your eyes knowing that their pain is on it’s way out and that you have contributed towards it.

Do you eat ice cream, drink coffee or any guilty pleasures?

For me being human means being balanced so things in moderation and within reason are acceptable like ice cream coffee and other guilty pleasures.

The theory behind chiropractic is that most human disease is caused by misalignments of the spine that apply pressure on surrounding nerves. It is thought misalignments cause blockages to your natural energy, which in turn will make you feel unwell or cause you pain. Although most people see McTimoney chiropractors mainly for problems with their backs, some believe they can also help relieve other medical ailments, such as asthma and irritable bowel syndrome.

Whatever you’re seeking the treatment for, you must always check that your chiropractor is registered with the General Chiropractic Council (GCC). The organisation regulates the profession, making sure that all practitioners have certain qualifications and chiropractic and who agree to comply with their code of practice.

McTimoney Chiropractor in London

McTimoney Chiropractor in LondonIf your back pain is getting you down and your neck ache is refusing to let up, then why don’t you seek the advice of your local chiropractor in West London? Chiropractic treatment has proven to be highly effective over the years. An alternative treatment, a chiropractor aims to improve and diagnose problems with the patient’s joints, ligaments, tendons and nerves without the use of drugs or surgery.

We see a dentist for our teeth, an optician checks our eyes and a medical doctor keeps an eye on our general heath, but a chiropractor will help improve your posture, muscle balance and mobility and they will also seek to avoid future health problems.

McTimoney chiropractors focus on preventing problems, before they occur. But they can also help ease lower back pain, trapped nerves, headaches and arthritis. McTimoney chiropractors use a gentle, whole-body form of therapy, which means it is perfectly safe for the elderly, young children and pregnant women to receive treatment.

The manipulation of the bones as carried out by McTimoney chiropractors are thought to enhance the natural self-healing capabilities of the body. However, chiropractors will never force bones to move, which can be painful. They will also advise you on how to avoid hurting yourself in your day to day life. They will show you how to sit correctly at your desk at work, the best way to stand for a long period of time, how to lift heavy items safely and how to avoid hurting yourself when doing the housework.

One of the most common reasons to see a chiropractor is for back pain, but they can also help treat complaints such as fatigue and stress by focusing on the nervous system. The nervous system is an extremely integral part of the body, as it communicates with your brain, muscles, organs and tissues. If there is an issue with your nervous system then problems can soon occur.

Whether you’re a professional athlete or an office worker, you’ll know how distracting pain anywhere in the body can be. The natural benefits of chiropractic treatment used with healthy eating, correct stretching and hydration can also boost circulation, increase removal of lactic acid, reduce swelling and soreness and help improve recovery time.

What is the McTimoney Method?

What is the McTimoney MethodMcTimoney Chiropractic is a method of adjusting the bones of the body to maintain the correct alignment of the spine to insure the nervous system  can work efficiently. The term “chiropractic” came from the Greek “done by hand” and is the largest healthcare profession in the world after medicine and dentistry.

McTimoney Chiropractic is an uncomplicated method comprising a variety of techniques, generally using only the Chiropractor’s hands, no medication and normally no X-rays.  Every single treatment is custom. It is a soft, natural and gentle approach and for treating the whole body.
